Spinal Stenosis
Spinal stenosis is the narrowing of the spinal cord resulting in painful compression and pinching of the nerves.
For most people, spinal stenosis is a result of aging. Some people are born with narrow spinal canals. Other causes include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, spinal tumors, trauma and a previous surgery.
Diagnosis
- Physical exam
- X-ray
- CT scan
- MRI scan
Treatment
- Medication, such as anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics and corticosteroid injections.
- Physical therapy.
- Support devices, including a corset or lumbar brace.
- Surgery may be recommended in severe cases. A decompression laminectomy removes the bony spurs in the spinal canal, freeing up spaces for the nerves and the spinal cord. Spinal fusion is fusing together two vertebrae to provide the spine with stronger support.
